Penguin Cupcakes

Here's something kind of lame about me: I only go the extra mile in the kitchen when it's for someone else. A professional psychoanalyst could offer some interesting ideas as to why this is the case: I think people will like me if I make them something amazing, I'm looking for excuse to try something normally considered "too much work," I'm seeking for a domestic identity to replace my hibernating career one. Who knows?

I got some cool cupcake books for Christmas last year. I've made two: monster cupcakes (for Hamilton..ha! I DO sometimes do it for my family) and these penguin ones, which I made for a friend who just had a baby (well, it was mainly for her kids disrupted by said baby).

Life is Good

Saturday was a great day. Nothing too crazy, out of the ordinary, but several times throughout the day I thought, "Kate, you need to remember you get to have days like this. Yeah, not every day will be amazing, but your life is pretty sweet. Try not to forget it too often."

9:00 - Drop the boys off at the gym's day care and go for a 90 minute bike ride along the beach. No company, no iPod, just me enjoying the sound of crashing waves on a chilly morning. I turned around at the beach where Alex proposed. *Sigh*

10:00 - Receive text from Alex that he's on his way to spend the day with an old friend. He thinks I resent this...I don't. He needs it, deserves it, so I love when he can do stuff like this.

10:45 - Take the boys to the library where I paid off a fine accrued months ago, so we could finally return to a happy routine of checking out books. Even Beckett picked one out.

11:45 - Pick up lunch at Chong's. While we wait for our order to be made, Beckett and Hamilton make each other laugh and laugh. The looks on the workers' and customers' faces tell me that it's not just a mommy that loves the sound of two little guys having fun.

12:00 - Lunch time. Beckett eats chow mein and teriyaki chicken. Hamilton eats a piece of broccoli. That's about right...

12:30 - Beckett goes down nicely for a nap, and I go back downstairs to sweep the usual lunch mess off the floor.

12:45 - Read all of Hamilton's library books to him, plus a couple more.

1:30 - Set Hamilton up in the office (no working TV) to watch a show, while I take a shower, get ready, and straighten up the house a little.

2:30 - More reading! :)

3:30 - Alex gets home. Beckett wakes up soon thereafter and is thrilled to see his daddy back at home. So thrilled in fact, that he rewards Alex by taking his FIRST steps toward him!

3:40 - Send Hamilton up for more TV, so Beckett can actually work on walking without getting tackled or having to race him to Alex or me. If I dwell on this too much, I feel totally guilty. Sometimes you just can't pay attention to both kids equally, especially at the same time. To be honest, Beckett's usually the loser on this one...

5:15 - Pick up a trusted babysitter.

5:45 - Head off on a double date with our friends Jen and Andy

6:10 - 9:00 - Eat dinner at the Comedy and Magic Club and then laugh for the next two hours. Even had a surprise appearance by Daniel Tosh...whom we liked even before his show (why do I put that in? because it's not often I'm so cutting edge:) ).

9:30 - Dessert at Salt Creek Grill. Apple tart. Yum but the ice cream-tart ratio was off :(.

11:00 -Take the sitter back home, while Andy helps Alex figure out how to set up our new TV.

12:00 - Beckett wakes up. Only a couple cold potstickers and some milk convince him to go back to sleep. Unfortunately, he's only sold on sleeping in our bed, but he's still little and doesn't move around a lot. His snuggly dino sleepers don't hurt his cause either.

See? A pretty solid day. Not included in the breakdown, of course, are the times I yelled at Hamilton or the "housewife" chores that I avoided. But overall, I'm declaring a big net gain on the day.

Procrastinating...

It is after midnight. I'm teaching Relief Society at 11am tomorrow (oops...make that today). I cannot figure out how to organize the lesson, even though I've been thinking about it for weeks. I'm feeling a bit panicky and not remotely confident, which is slightly ironic since the lesson is about appreciating yourself. I am also, as a result, easily distracted because if I'm doing something else, I'm not thinking about this lesson that might not happen.

What am I distracted by?

Thinking about Carolina basketball. How I'm sad I missed so much of the season and that I got sidetracked by Costco and bedtime and thus missed seeing them beat Duke. I'm smiling thinking about my dad calling me as soon as he could to talk about the win...and that as soon as I knew who was on the phone, I knew the purpose of the call. Go Heels.

My eyes are wandering our bookcases. I pulled out my Billy Collins books and read a couple poems. He is so good. Sometimes funny, sometimes poignant. Never cliched. They are even better because I've heard him read them. If anyone wants some poem recommendations, let me know. Too lazy to type any out here...besides, I'm supposed to be working on my lesson, remember?

And now I find myself writing on my blog. Maybe writing here will help writing and organizing elsewhere?

Hmmmmmm...is it working?

Shoot.
